Details

Summary

Ippo points out to Takamura that while he is indeed an in-fighter that uses the Dempsey Roll and the Gazelle Punch, and has experience against the Flicker Jab, he is not a southpaw. Takamura wonders if Ippo has ever noticed his pivot leg when he attacks a lot and uses the Dempsey Roll. Ippo tests it out by shadowboxing and realises that he does switch his pivot leg sometimes. Takamura notes that fighters like him just pick whichever leg is easiest to land a punch with, so Ippo has been switching without realising it. Ippo claims that when he jumps in, it is always with his right foot, as if he tried with his left foot he would be too far to attack, however, Takamura advises him to simply try switching legs and figure out what it feels like. For many days, Ippo trains using his left hand and pivoting with his right leg to get a feel as what it is like being a southpaw. One day, he inserts a long log to the hillside near a sign to represent Mashiba's Flicker Jab and right uppercut, and a small peg in the ground as Mashiba's left pivot leg. He tries to step in with his right foot to outside the peg, however, fails and rolls on the ground. Ippo remembers how him and Antonio knocked legs a lot when they fought, so it is the mirror of that. Ippo tries again, weaving side-to-side under the log while throwing lefts, then lends a high and low left combination on the sign. After succeeding again, Ippo prepares to do two hundred more.
