Summary
At an appointment with Yamaguchi, Ippo receives a specially made rubber to reduce impact from the doctor, who tells him to put it inside his gloves to avoid injuring his hand. Aoki, who got Yagi to lend him a car, takes Ippo to a gym where he will be having the first of five upcoming sparring matches with opponents from weight classes above his, as part of his training menu before the title match. Arriving at the first gym, Ippo faces Tamura; the "hope" of the junior lightweight division. As soon as the bell rings, Ippo knocks-out his heavier opponent easily. After defeating a total of four sparring partners from different gyms and all of them weight classes above him, Ippo arrives at the fifth and final gym, where a welterweight sparring partner awaits. Not wanting to be the fifth victim, Umezu gets Ippo against the ropes (following his coach's plan) and delivers a hit that Ippo blocks. Leaving all witnesses in shock after blocking a punch more than four weight classes above, Ippo delivers a combination ending with a body blow that leaves his opponent unable to continue. After leaving, Ippo tells Aoki that Sendō's punches are even stronger and he needs more training before the actual fight.
