- Title Page Character(s): Ippo Makunouchi, Genji Kamogawa
Summary
Kamogawa begins explaining to Ippo how the new Dempsey Roll will work. tells Ippo that the time has come to tell him how the new Dempsey Roll will work. Kamogawa reveals to him that his new Dempsey Roll would be neither entirely horizontal or vertical, but diagonally. As Ippo is confused, Kamogawa asks why Ippo added the uppercut to his Dempsey Roll. Ippo answers that it was because he thought the technique wouldn't be effective anymore as is. Ippo explains that the Dempsey Roll had a great impact when he first used it since he was weaving while punching and dodging, suiting his style with offence and defence. However, he notes that people started to study and defend it in different ways, and then Sawamura proved that it's ultimate weakness is the counter. Ippo remembers he won by stopping the momentum to alter the rhythm, but he doesn't think it would work on the world stage. He believes in order to keep winning, he needs to not only change the rhythm, but the attack itself. Ippo claims that he didn't specifically think of moving vertically instead, but he tried it and found out he was able to do it thanks to his training. Kamogawa tells Ippo that the answer he came to was headed in the right direction, however, Ippo notes that it didn't work in the spar against Matsuura. Kamogawa claims to think diagonally. if his opponent backs away, he would let his momentum carry him forward to hit them with a Gazelle Punch. Ippo tests the new idea out and is amazed how smooth it is when he shifts his weight. Ippo starts training by pushing Kamogawa as he rides a scooter.
