- Title Page Character(s): Ippo Makunouchi
Summary
Ippo goes for a left, but Fujiwara blocks and delivers a right uppercut. Ippo responds with a body blow and the two boxers begin exchanging punches. Kamogawa and Yagi note that Ippo is close to losing because he's not used to middle range, but Ippo lunges in anyway and dodges a left, putting himself back in close range. They simultaneously hit each other with a right but, Ippo wins the exchange. Ippo overwhelms Fujiwara again so he goes for another headbutt, but Ippo counters with a headbutt of his own and finishes the match with two consecutive uppercuts. As Umezawa and his friends leave, they finally realise that Ippo is indeed strong.
The next day at school, Umezawa forces Ippo to follow him. Ippo sees a whole gang of delinquents and tries to run away, but Umezawa immediately stops him in an attempt to assure him. Then, he introduces him to everyone as his boxer friend while he tells them about the match. Ippo has an ambiguous feeling as the person who bullied him calls him a "friend", but is nevertheless happy about it.
