Details
- Techniques Introduced: Backstep Hook Counter
- Title Page Character(s): Takeshi Sendō, Ricardo Martínez
Summary
Ricardo's left jab lands on Sendō's face. However, unfazed from the punch, Sendō quickly launches a left straight that Ricardo blocks, but is sent him back some. Sendō goes towards Ricardo, who sends out a left jab. Sendō head slips to dodge the jab and immediately follows with a left straight. Ricardo spins his neck with the punch to neutralise the damage. The audience goes wild after witnessing Sendō grazing Ricardo's face. Bill is annoyed by the cheering and notes how even though that didn't land directly, it still counts as a point. Sendō feels as if his heart is louder than the cheers and that he feels boiling blood coursing to his knuckles, planning to go wild. After blocking a right hook, Ricardo feels his right arm going numb from guarding against Sendō's attacks, and since Ricardo's putting more force into each movement he makes, it is making his reactions slower. Blocking another right hook sends Ricardo close to the ropes. Ricardo knows that if his back touches them, Sendō will get even more fired up. As Sendō throws another right, Ricardo throws a left hook while backstepping, countering Sendō's attack and hitting his face. Sendō throws a barrage of lefts and rights that hit Ricardo's block while Ricardo lands his attacks.
Mari points out that Sendō is throwing more punches now. Ippo notes how both of them are best at middle-range fighting, but while they may seem similar, they're actually a bit different. He explains that Ricardo's style is to use attacks that go in a straight path to make the best of his reach, while Sendō's style is using powerful punches with rotations such as hooks, which means Sendō has to be a bit closer. He adds that since Ricardo used a hook instead of a left jab, that means they are closer and at Sendō's range. The punches Ricardo blocked have pushed him to the ropes, however, his punches still land their mark on Sendō. Sendō thinks that he gets stronger the more he fights, daring Ricardo to stop him, his advance, and his heart. Bill recalls how, with just his left, Ricardo has defeated opponents with only jabs, but now they are being made to look cheap. He believes it is because Sendō's adrenaline is at it's max, making him so worked up that he can't even comprehend the damage he's in. He notes that there's a way to make him settle down, and it's being prepared now.
Trivia
- On page 7, Bill's shirt erroneously says "KING or TIGER" instead of "KING VS. TIGER".
